Value Bets

What are Value Bets at Holdem Poker

A value bet is made when you know you have the best hand and you want to extract maximum value from your opponent.

A judgment call

Value betting is extremely profitable, but requires a little skill to get right. You need to be able to gauge exactly how big a bet to make. Too big and your opponent will fold; too small and you will not be getting maximum value from your hand.

So how do you decide on the size of your value bet?

Observe and think

A value bet comes on the river. You have played through the hand and are looking to squeeze that last little bit of money out of your opponent with your hand. How big a bet do you think he will call? Well look back over the hand and think a little.

Has he been acting weak, or has he been confidently calling your bets? Is he on tilt and likely to call any bet? Has he been very aggressive and would re-raise a small bet to try and prove hes the boss?

If you cannot answer these questions, then you are going to find it hard to choose the right size of value bet. Poker is a game of information. The more of it you gather and use, the bigger your profits will be.

What hand do you think he has?

If you are observant and have been keeping tabs on your opponents playing style, you should be able to work out approximately what he has based on the community cards showing and his actions. The bigger his hand is, the bigger the value bet he will call. However, if he has been chasing a draw and missed it, he is unlikely to call even a small value bet.
