Table Position

Why is table position so important?

It may seem silly to think it matters where you are seated at the poker table, but nothing can be farther from the truth. Table position is in fact a very important consideration before play begins. Each position has its own strengths and weaknesses. In order to give yourself an advantage you must learn to exploit them. This helps maximize profits from each of the hands.

The hot seat

The hottest and most powerful seat or position in each hand is the person with the dealer button. This is simply because they get to act last. Therefore the player in the position of dealer gets to see and categorize each opponent as they play. This means you are given a lot of information before you need to act and remember, poker is a game of valuable information.
So if you are holding that beautiful button it is imperative you keep your eyes sharp and ears open. By doing this you learn to maximize your enormous advantage. If any of the players seem weak or act nervous about the community cards, this is your chance to show strength and aggression thus sweeping the money in the pot. If you happen to see a betting war taking place act like you are holding a weak hand, this way you know its probably a good idea to save your money and fold.
“Blinds – you are the weakest link, goodbye!”

The weakest position in poker is in the blinds. Because you get to act first in each round you must also be extremely careful. It is very possible you may fall into a trap set by a player who will act later in the game. Play cautiously in the blinds unless you know you are holding a hand that can’t be beat. Then you can come out with your shark teeth showing.
The basic principle of position strength in poker is the later you act, the stronger your position. The sooner you must act, the weaker you are.

Therefore the players who act right away after the blinds are in a weaker position. Keeping this in mind when you are in a strong position will allow you to take advantage and win some money.
