Playing on The Button

Long lives the King

When on the button, you are in the strongest position with Texas Hold’em Poker. You are in fact the King of your domain because you are able to play last while watching and learning everyone’s actions.

Kingdom Power

The royal seat is where it’s at and you my friend can abuse the power. You can steal the blinds, just like you would tax the poor to give to the rich. History has seen many kingdoms house tyrants and today it’s no different for you at the table. How’s it done you ask? Keep reading and we will show you how to rule the table with an iron fist.

Scenario:

Imagine everyone at the table folds, or maybe you get a limper or two and the action comes to you on the button. What’s the best course of action?

Should you join the peasants and become limper number two or three? If you answered yes to this question, you should stand up and bend over to kiss your kingdom good bye – you’re not fit to be king!

Raise!

If you are lucky enough to have found yourself in the dealer position with a single weakling before you and everyone else folded, then you should take advantage of the weakness shown and raise the pot.

Why?

Its simple, the blinds know they are going to act first in subsequent rounds and will likely face subsequent bets from you, so its safe to say they will probably fold. The limper, whom has already acted weak by limping in, will also fold to your show of strength and you will pick up both the blinds and the limpers money without any effort.

There be trouble in the Royal Court!

As all scenarios seemingly go, sometimes they’re not as smooth as we would like. It may be that the big blind (the schmuck) is holding a pair of (rival) Kings and he will re-raise you. Unfortunately all Kings must be witness to some rebellion amongst the peasants. However, that re-raise will occur a lot less often than everyone folding, so in the long run you will make a steady profit.

Also the limper may be bluffing and is holding a stronger hand than you think. This occurs earlier on, they know if they raise from that position most everyone will figure out they have a strong hand and fold. This means they won’t make any money from the hand and will try and trap someone – normally the button King – into raising.

Power and Pattern are two different things

Remember that if you raise every single time you are in the dealer position, your opponents are going to catch on to your tyranny. Go ahead and apply the strategy but just not to often that it becomes predictable.
