Over Betting

What is over betting?

Over betting occurs when a Holdem Poker player makes a bet that is disproportionately high compared to the size of the pot.
Bet Smart

In no limit Texas Hold’em, player’s can bet as much as they want. However, if there is currently $10 in the pot and you decide to be $500, don’t be surprised when everyone either thinks your insane or holding a really strong hand.
Wagering an insane amount of money into a small pot is a dead give away that you probably hold two Aces in your hand. Why else would you risk so much money to win so little? Assuming you are in a healthy state of mind, it simply doesn’t make sense to risk $500 to win $10 unless you know you can’t be beaten.

Poker Bully’s

More over in cash game tournaments you will sometimes find a player who is a bit of bully. You can tell by the fact he or she purposely over bets on the pot because he or she has a huge amount of chips in front of them. You on the other hand have a relatively small in comparison amount of chips in front of you – itty-bitty in fact. The fully knows that if you call over his bet and lose, you will more than likely be busted out. The bullyt understands that you have to wait for the best hand possible, which only comes around as often as Haley’s comet. Be assured the bully will win a lot of pots before you can call him out.

Here is a scenario and strategy the bully will use to take all of your chips and push you out of the game:
It’s not very nice but all is fair in love and poker

Change things up a bit, or vary the way you play – this is absolutely vital in Poker. When you become to predictable and display a pattern then all of your opponents will know exactly what to expect and begin to intimidate and exploit. Being completely unpredictable and tossing out an over bet every once in a while will leave your opponents thinking – wtf? What the hell did he just do? – That’s a good thing!

However, over betting too often can land you in a new fish bowl surrounded by the hungry sharks. Over betting should always be looked upon with caution, but not totally discarded as an option. Keep it in your arsenal, but don’t use this rocket launcher to take out a fly.
