Overview of Hold’em Odds
An important skill for every player to develop is being able to calculate the odds of every hand. You see, in every hand that is played in Texas Hold’em Poker it have its own probabilities and odds. If you can calculate odds or have a general idea of how it affects every play, you will have developed a unique skill. With the ability to consider every hand possibility successfully, you will have an advantage during the games. Knowing all you can will make or break you in the long run.
It’s Easier than you think!
Some new players may become intimidated when it comes to numbers and figures. But, the truth is you don’t need a brain for statistics or probability because many of the calculations you may have to make are relatively simple. After all, poker is a game of decisions and knowing the probabilities involved in a hand can help you make the right decision at the right time.
Let’s look at one scenario:
You are holding a pair of kings before the flop, when your opponent pushes all of his or chips into the middle. More than likely, or at least we hope, you are probably going to call. At this point you are absolutely certain you have one of the strongest hands in Hold’em. Your only minimal concern is that your opponent may be holding two Aces. However, because you already know the odds of aces being dealt – which is every 222 hands or so, you know the odds are in your favor. Thus you make a positive decision when calling.
Knowing to count your Out’s
Improving on your hand is also very important with Hold’em. Players refer to these chances as “improving out’s”. Scenario Two:
You are holding a 7 and 8 of Diamonds and the flop comes giving a 7 of Hearts, 4 of Diamonds and 6 of Diamonds. This is not a bad hand and pretty good by Hold’em standards. Remember that any one of the nine remaining Diamonds in the deck(keep in mind there are 13 of each suit and you currently hold two with two more on the table) will give you a Flush. Now add to that another two seven’s will give you Trips, while any of the three eight’s remaining gives you two pair. And finally any of the four five’s remaining can give you a Straight.
When totaling it out you have yourself 18 outs (9+2+3+4). So, seeing there are only 52 cards in the deck and two of them are in your hand with three on the table - means there are still 47 you have not seen. You now know for sure of those 47outs, 18 are going improve your hand. This means a little better than one card out of every three is going to improve your position and there are still two cards to come in the hand. By knowing all of this, it is evidently clear you should be pushing your chips to the middle. Luck can still be a lady
Keep in mind when we break this down into even simpler terms, understand that odds give you a certain outlook or peek at the picture but not the entire picture. You also must take into account your opponent and how he or she has been playing before making any final decision. If your opponent only bets when he is holding a pair of aces, then you don’t really need any odds calculations to know when to drop your cards in the muck pile. Keep sharp and use the odds but also rely on a bit of instinct. |
