Playing Texas Hold’em online is of course slightly different than the real thing. For one you get dealt the hands a lot faster and strong hands still won’t come along as often as you like. Therefore, when you do get a strong hand it is important to make the most of it while you got it.
Playing the Big Slick
The big slick refers to an Ace and king being your two hole cards. It is a fantastic starting hand but it can be pretty easy to get trapped when playing this hand. Thus the name Big Slick, it can be a slippery one to handle and if your not carful slip out of your hands.
Understand that AK is powerful against one or two opponents, but once you get three or more in the hand its like putting Superman in a kryptonite bath. Therefore, if dealt this hand, its best to raise the pot and get some of your opponents to fold.
After the flop
If you do get a called and the flop doesn’t give you an ace or king, then its time to slow down a bit. It won’t matter if one of your opponents has called with a pair of two’s, he has got you beat. That player has know way of knowing he is winning, so here’s where it can get a bit tricky.
Remember, if you missed the flop all you are holding is ace high. But your raise before the flop signified strength, so you might want to throw another bet out after the flop to represent a big hand. This is called a continuation bet. On the turn and the river
If an opponent calls your continuation bet and the turn doesn’t give you an ace or a king, then its time to quit. Your opponent almost certainly has something and has met your show of strength every round. Unless you know for a fact that the player you are facing is a chronic bluffer, then its time to check and fold.
If you do hit an ace or a king on the flop, then by all means bet, but do keep an eye out for opponents who may have made a flush or a straight. Even harder to spot and therefore even easier to lose money on is the case where your opponent is holding a pair and hits trips on the flop, while you hit your ace. This situation in Hold’em Poker normally results in you losing money, unless you can sniff out that you are beat and fold very quickly.
Be careful
Keep in mind that looking down at your hole cards and seeing an Ace or King is always a nice start, but it doesn’t always lead to a happy ending.
Just take your time with big slick and don’t get carried away with your bets. Always keep an eye on what your opponent is up to and know when to throw your cards into the muck. If you make all the right decisions, then its only Lady Luck who can let you down. |
